The Bible Talks’ (TBT) is a non-denominational Christian organisation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and a ministry of ENTRUST, which seeks to raise up and train a new generation of Gospel workers
At TBT we aim to help you hear God speak as His Word, the Bible, is faithfully and clearly taught. We believe that the Bible is all about salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ and so we endeavour to teach people this! We run group bible studies in the res’s, and services on Sunday and Friday lunchtimes. We also arrange one on one Bible studies and other meetings. As the Scriptures about the Lord Jesus are explained, it is our belief that the Holy Spirit is at work in God’s power, changing and transforming lives.
We have members from all year groups, and a variety of different courses. Everyone is welcome!! Click on the ‘your campus’ link to find out more details….
Our need: We believe that humankind was created to rule the world under a loving and committed Creator, God. We believe that humankind refused to be ruled by the loving creator, and rebelled against Him. As a result, humankind has infuriated God, incurring His wrath to be against us. The Bible tells us that God will not allow us to rebel forever. His punishment for our rebellion is death and judgement.
God’s response: Being unable to do anything about this situation ourselves, our judge [God] has mercy on us and puts into action a plan of rescue. God, the offended party, decides to have mercy on the offenders by paying the price for rebellion against God, himself. He does this by becoming a man [the Lord Jesus Christ] and dying on the cross in our place, thus taking the punishment and dying the death that we deserved. Jesus rose from the dead as the judge of the world. Having survived death, he now has the right to call for a response.
The only response: The Bible records only two responses to this news. We accept God’s plan for rescue by relying on the death of Jesus to bring us forgiveness and on His resurrection to give us hope of surviving death. Alternately we can ignore God’s plan, continuing to run life on our own. We believe that there cannot be any spiritual life without the death of Jesus. There cannot be any hope for life after death without the resurrection of Jesus.

At TBT we run a variety of meetings and events to keep you occupied, and to teach you what the Bible says about Jesus Christ. Click on the ‘your campus’ link to find out times and venues…
Sunday church service: We meet every Sunday very close to campus at Christ Church, Glenwood at Durban Girls’ High School. We have a church service including singing, prayer and a sermon from the Bible. This is followed by a time to make a comment about the sermon, or ask questions about anything you don’t understand or agree with. We always have tea, coffee and some eats afterwards too!
“I love being part of the church because the word of God is at the centre of the preaching, singing and in our prayer time after the service. After church we have tea and biscuits/sandwiches where we get to know other people more. I am always amazed and thankful to God for the work He`s doing through His word by the power of the Holy Spirit”
Makhosi.
Friday lunchtime sermon: On Fridays we have a short talk from the Bible, with a chance to ask questions afterwards about anything you don’t understand or agree with. We always aim to clearly explain the message of Jesus, so bring your lunch, your questions and your friends! Look out for us doing the questionnaires before this meeting too….
“What I love about TBT is that the bible is really taught and explained well. Hearing God’s word radically changes ones life. It has definitely changed mine. How cool is that!!”
Musa.
Bible Studies: We get together in smaller groups to study the Bible. Sometime we go through topical studies, such as looking at the basic beliefs of Christianity, and sometimes we work through a book of the Bible. The aim of our Bible studies is to sink our teeth into Gods word, to see what it really has to say, and how it should affect our lives.
“I really enjoy our Bible study, as I get to catch up with my friends, and pray with them. I also learn how to study the God’s word, and feel equipped to study the Bible myself.”
TBT member
Other Stuff: During the year we also arrange one off events, such as the Mid-year Conference, where we go away together for a weekend of Bible teaching and fellowship, and our Mission week, where the focus particularly on evangelism for a week and aim to tell everyone on campus about our Saviour Jesus Christ! Keep watching the website for more details….

Kim Carr, Campus Director: I’m a Capetonian & studied a BA @UCT before I went to Bible College. I came to know Jesus as my King when I was quite small thanks to my Mom who introduced me to Jesus & told me about his awesome rescue. I head up the latest addition to the TBT family (so exciting!), help organise our Mid Year Conference & teach the bible to female students on campus. I love most things you can do outside on a sunny day, especially the beach & hiking…and there’s nothing like a bit of Indie Rock, Electro or Thai food to put me in a good mood! Oh, and my name only started sounding Japanese when I married my awesome husband, Ant, on National Braai Day in 2007. |

Ant Carr, TBT Staff: I am from Cape Town (although i spent the first 18 years of my life in Jo’burg..!), and have moved up to KwaZulu-Natal to join some friends in Gospel work in the City of Choice (so i’m told) of PMB. I used to think Christians were lame until I realised that Jesus was real, that the Bible was true & that I needed rescue! I spend most of my week at a church learning how to teach God’s Word to other people, equipping them to teach other people about Jesus. I teach regularly at our TBT Friday Lunchtime Talks, run a students bible study and head up the young adults & young families groups at church. I surf, cycle, run, enjoy outdoor stuff, like braaiing, and love a rowdy game of Risk. |

‘The Bible Talks’ (TBT) is a student church started by David Ng and Sihle Mooi with two apprentices at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus back in 2003. The vision of the founding members was: To Glorify God by reaching out, building up and sending people out through and with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into the province of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
With this purpose and by the grace of God, TBT was established and can be found at the Howard College, Westville, Edgewood and Pietermaritzburg campuses, as well as in Pretoria. The mere fact that you’re reading this letter is evidence of the success of this ministry! Not too long ago, you sat in the lecture theatres for the Friday talks, Sunday meetings, participated in the Bible-studies and attended the various church and social events organized by TBT.
Today TBT still has Friday lunch-time talks, Thursday Bible-studies, weekly 1-2-1 meetings, Sunday morning services, seminars and Monday evening Bible Ministry Training (BMT) sessions for small group leaders. There are also 3 annual events: Orientation-week, Mission-week and MYC (Mid-Year Conference), where the TBT staff works extra-hard to draw student’s to hear the gospel, enjoy fellowship with God and His people through the teaching of the Bible. In the future, TBT hopes to continue reaching out to the UKZN students with the gospel, recruiting those who are godly, desire to do full-time ministry and are gifted for ministry into the Apprenticeship Program. There are currently 4 apprentices working at TBT.
As past members of TBT, we would like to invite you to seriously consider partnering with us through prayer and financially support. This will enable TBT to continue its work on the campuses while seeking to:
- Train up more and more former students for full-time Christian ministry.
- Fund the Mid-year conference
- Meet the costs involved in running TBT
